“Summer’s lease hath all too short a date."
-William Shakespeare, “Sonnet 18”
I love neutral color palettes – in interiors, clothing and jewelry. As I discuss in my book, Ode to Color, there are reasons for their enduring popularity. They are classic and effortless. They are endlessly versatile and seasonless. And they are inherently relaxed and relaxing.
This is my preferred palette at this very time of year. The days are still long, the waters are swimmable, and the temperatures all but compel us to relax, stay cool, and savor the moment. We do it with straw hats, linen shirts, and hemp hammocks. We gravitate toward breezy shades of tan, ecru, and khaki. We crave the simplicity of sand and stone colors, wheat and beige.
Soon enough, we will return to a more structured and demanding season: a new school year, a renewed intensity in our work schedules, a fuller calendar. Let’s take it easy while we can.
