It is only a slight exaggeration to say that my career was launched from scarves. I studied the art of hand painting silk in the summer before my senior year at Syracuse. I presented my handiwork to my professor as part of my thesis when I returned to school. His response was tepid, his advice discouraging: “I don’t think you’ll get very far with those.”
I didn’t listen. After graduating, I created a collection of hand painted silks, four of which I sold to MOMA as scarves. It was only a little later that I quit my first job in New York City and headed to a trade show in Lille, France with 48 original designs to see what I could do on my own. I sold every design within three days, and with the proceeds, I started my career in earnest.
Aurora, my new collection of impossibly sumptuous ombre scarves, is an homage to that history and to the beauty and warmth that artfully crafted textiles provide us. With colors that move from subtle to intense tones, they are light, soft, and generously sized for tremendous versatility. Their warmth comes from touches of cashmere (Oceania and Fawn), while the most festive of the three colors – Berry – is made of wool graced with silk.
Drape yourself, wrap yourself, cover yourself in these beautiful fabrics any way you like. They are timeless, seasonless, and simply gorgeous.
